27.04.2011 - Eighth International Chlorine Technology Conference & Exhibition in Budapest

DELA’s stabilisation technology enhances great interest in safe disposal of liquid mercury

According to regulation EC 1102/2008 from March 15, 2011, surplus metallic mercury from the chlorine alkali industry is classified as waste and must be disposed of in a safe manner. This was one of the topics on the Eight International Chlorine Technology Conference & Exhibition, taking place in Budapest on April 5-7, 2011. DELA GmbH made a presentation on stabilisation of metallic mercury, forming mercury sulphide, which is the most stable mercury compound of all, occurring in nature as cinnabar. Combined with final disposal of the mercury sulphide in a salt mine is this considered the safest solution for handling of surplus metallic mercury.

All participants were invited to visit the DELA exhibition stand afterwards, where the total handling chain for metallic mercury was presented on a big poster. Many visitors found their way to us and DELA got the opportunity to meet with representatives from the industry, all showing a great interest in our technology. The beautifully coloured mercury sulphide was traditionally used as a pigment, vermillion, and a painting in the stand offered the visitors to experience also this application.
